What are the best enrichment toys for dogs?

The best enrichment dog toys depend on your dog's personality and how they like to play, and the right dog toys support daily canine enrichment. If your dog is food motivated, treat dispensers like the Woof Pupsicle, West Paw Toppls and SodaPup Honey Pots are brilliant, but a wider range also includes snuffle mats and toys, puzzle toys, lick mat options, chew toys that support oral health and jaw strength, and interactive feeders that can slow down fast eaters, with different difficulty levels to suit everything from puppies to older dogs and encourage problem solving. For sniffers and foragers, snuffle mats and toys are a great shout. If your dog loves a challenge, puzzle toys like the Woof Flyball 2-in-1 or the KONG Rewards Tinker will really put their brain to work. For calmer, licking-based enrichment, a lick mat like the Woof LickMat or SodaPup Lighthouse Mat is a firm favourite. The honest answer? Most dogs benefit from having a mix of all of the above.

What to put in dog enrichment toys?

The classics work brilliantly are dog peanut butter, wet food, dog pate and plain yoghurt are all great choices for lick mats and fillable toys like Toppls and Pupsicles. For treat dispensers, small training treats or kibble work well as they tumble out easily. Want to make it last longer? Fill the toy with your chosen filling and pop it in the freezer for an hour or two before giving it to your dog. It turns a 5-minute activity into a 20-minute one. You can also layer different fillings in a Toppl or Pupsicle for extra variety. Just make sure everything you use is dog-safe and there is no xylitol, onion, grapes or anything from the avoid list.

How to make dog enrichment toys?

You don't need to make enrichment toys from scratch when there are so many brilliant ready-made options, but there's plenty you can do to make them even more rewarding at home. The easiest trick is freezing. Take any fillable toy like a Woof Pupsicle, West Paw Toppl or SodaPup Honey Pot, fill it with peanut butter, wet food or dog pate and freeze it overnight. You can also hide treats or chews inside snuffle mats or bury them in a snuffle toy to create a DIY foraging activity. Layering different textures and flavours inside a Toppl like kibble, soft food and a natural treat, also adds variety and extends the challenge. Simple, but really effective.

Why are enrichment toys good for dogs?

Dogs are intelligent animals that need mental stimulation just as much as they need physical exercise and enrichment toys deliver exactly that. When a dog has to sniff, problem-solve, lick or work for their food, it activates the parts of their brain that keep them calm, focused and satisfied. The slow licking action of a lick mat has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, which is why they're so popular for grooming sessions, fireworks nights and vet visits. Treat dispensers and puzzle toys help reduce boredom-related behaviours like chewing furniture or excessive barking. Slow feeder bowls extend mealtimes and support better digestion. In short, a dog that gets regular enrichment is a happier, calmer and better-behaved dog and that's better for everyone.

How often should I use enrichment toys with my dog?

For optimal benefits, enrichment activities should be incorporated into your dog's day regularly. Short, frequent sessions, such as during training sessions or mealtimes can keep your dog entertained and mentally stimulated throughout the day. Using enrichment toys daily helps prevent boredom and supports your dog's overall wellbeing.

Are enrichment toys suitable for all dog breeds and ages?

Yes, enrichment toys can be adapted to suit dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. Puppies may enjoy simpler puzzles and chew toys to build confidence, while older dogs might benefit from moderately challenging puzzle toys to keep their minds sharp. Always choose toys appropriate for your dog's breed, size, and skill level to ensure safe and effective enrichment.

Can enrichment toys help with behavioural issues?

Absolutely. Enrichment toys engage your dog's natural instincts and provide mental stimulation that can reduce anxiety, prevent boredom, and decrease destructive behaviours such as excessive barking or chewing. Incorporating enrichment activities into your dog's routine can improve their behaviour and overall happiness.

What are some easy DIY enrichment ideas I can try at home?

Simple enrichment ideas include hiding kibble in cardboard boxes or muffin tins, using a rubber mat with treats inside as a snuffle mat, or scattering kibble around the garden for your dog to hunt. You can also create scent games by hiding treats inside rolled-up towels or under cups. These activities are fairly easy to set up and provide great fun for both you and your dog.

Are lick mats dishwasher safe?

Many lick mats are made from non-toxic, durable materials like silicone or rubber and are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Always check the manufacturer's instructions to ensure your lick mat can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher, helping to maintain hygiene and prolong the toy's life.

Can enrichment toys help build my dog's confidence?

Yes, enrichment activities that challenge your dog to solve puzzles or learn new tricks can build confidence and encourage new skills. When your dog successfully completes a task or finds tasty treats inside a puzzle toy, it boosts their self-esteem and keeps them dog happy and entertained.

Are enrichment toys safe for puppies?

Yes, though it's worth choosing toys with your puppy's age and chewing strength in mind. Younger puppies do best with softer, simpler enrichment like a lick mat or an easy treat-dispensing toy, since these build confidence without frustrating a puppy who's still learning to problem-solve. As teeth and jaw strength develop, puzzle toys and chew-based enrichment can be introduced gradually. Always supervise a puppy with a new toy the first few times, check regularly for any signs of wear, and avoid anything with small removable parts that could be swallowed. Starting enrichment early is genuinely valuable, it helps puppies build good problem-solving habits and settle into calm, independent play from a young age.

Sizing

The Palm Tree measures approximately 16.5 x 10.2 x 26.7cm, while each Dolphin Miniz is approximately 13cm long. The complete toy weighs around 100g.

Instructions

1. Place all three Dolphin Miniz inside the openings of the palm-tree burrow.

2. Let your dog investigate the toy and work out how to retrieve the hidden dolphins using their nose and paws.

3. Once they've found all three, pop them back inside and start another round.

4. For dogs who are new to interactive burrow toys, make the first few games easier by leaving part of a dolphin visible. As they become familiar with the game, you can make the hiding challenge more interesting.

5. The dolphins can also be used independently for supervised interactive play.

6. Always supervise your dog while playing and make sure the individual Miniz are an appropriate size for your dog. Remove the toy if it becomes damaged.

Materials & Care

Materials

The Palm Tree and Dolphin Miniz are made from soft polyester plush fabric and contain stuffing made from 100% recycled materials.

Each of the three Dolphin Miniz contains a round squeaker.

As the dolphins are small plush toys, they should be used with appropriate supervision, particularly with dogs who like to chew or pull at soft toys.

Care

For everyday cleaning, gently spot clean the plush surfaces when needed and allow the toy to dry completely before returning it to your dog.

Check the palm tree and each dolphin regularly for loose stitching, tears, exposed filling or other signs of damage.

No dog toy is indestructible. If the toy becomes damaged or any part becomes loose, discontinue use and replace it.
