You should never underestimate the importance of hydration for dogs. Dogs sweat and pant, losing fluids. Therefore, we need to ensure they drink enough water to stay hydrated and healthy. That’s why we have chosen Furr Boost as our brand of the month.

Furr Boost's delicious dog drinks assist in replenishing lost fluids and nutrients, ideal for dogs that may not drink enough water.

Within this article, we will be exploring all things Furr Boost and dive into the importance of hydration. Including an exclusive interview with owner and founder of Furr Boost, Louise Toal!

Why is hydration important for dogs?

Water is undeniably essential, not just for us humans, but for our furry companions too. If your dog becomes dehydrated, it will cause many negative outcomes that will affect your dog's health and wellbeing.

For example, it can lead to the loss of vital electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and chloride. Electrolytes help to transport nutrients into cells throughout the body and contribute to good nerve and muscle function. If dogs don't drink enough water, they can't control their body temperature and may get sick more easily. In more severe cases, dehydration can lead to organ failure.

As you can see, hydration is important for our fur baby’s various organs and body functions. Here are some more important benefits of hydration for dogs:

  • Regulates body temperature: As mentioned, keeping hydrated helps dogs to continue to regulate their body temperature. Dogs are not able to sweat as much as humans, this is why their body risks overheating if it’s dehydrated. Water helps to regulate body temperature by moving heat away from the body’s core.

  • Helps digestion: If your dog is dehydrated, they may have constipation or may find it difficult to digest their food. Hydration helps them to break down food and allows their body to absorb nutrients.

  • Lubricates joints: Water helps to reduce any pain, stiffness, or friction in our pup’s joints by lubricating them. Hydration is especially crucial for older dogs as joint issues will be more common.

  • Supports organ function: Dogs’ kidneys, liver, and heart, need good hydration to function as they should. A failure to hydrate can lead to organ damage and failure in severe cases!

So, if your dog doesn't drink enough water or you're seeking a healthy alternative, try Furr Boost dog drinks.

She explained its beginnings, the benefits it has for our dog's health, how to use it for enrichment, plus much more!

How did Furr Boost come to be what it is today? We would love to know more about the Furr Boost story!

“Furr Boost began when Phoebe, my now 11-year-old Beagle, fell ill with a bladder infection when she was 18 months old. After working with the vet, I discovered that the issue was linked to the food she was eating.

So, we changed her food. However, when she was diagnosed in the summer months, I needed Phoebe to drink and flush the issue away but found that she didn’t have much interest in water. This is why we decided to make her a tasty protein drink to encourage her fluid intake.

Louise and Phoebe

My background is as a food science and technologist. At the time, I was working for a large German manufacturer who made sports recovery, protein, and meal replacement drinks for humans. I thought I would use this knowledge in helping Phoebe recover and added functional ingredients to the dog drinks I made her.

Within two weeks Phoebe was feeling better as her diet had changed. But we also noticed the change in her cognitive behaviour, she was more alert and listening, which we put down to her being hydrated. During dog walks, people regularly stopped us to ask what we fed her and how we groomed her, because of the high shine on her coat.

It was our dog walker who came in everyday whilst we were at work who encouraged me to launch the dog drinks as she had seen first-hand the changes in Phoebe.

We researched if there was a market demand for this product, and the results were very positive. It took five years to figure out how to make and package the product on a large scale. Finally, Furr Boost was launched in December 2020.

The timing of the launch was a bit of a flop as no-one really knew we existed and getting above “the noise” of dog over social media in lockdown was proving difficult. However, once the restrictions had lifted, we started events in September 2021. We placed samples out for dogs to try and were quickly inundated with dog owners, seeing our sales soar from that moment onwards!”

Why is Furr Boost so beneficial for our dogs and how does it contribute to their healthy lifestyle?

“The main benefit of Furr Boost dog drinks is hydration. Many dogs don't drink enough water or are picky about it for different reasons. This is when health concerns can creep in.

We all know ourselves that we are made of 80% water and that keeping hydrated is important to help carry vital nutrients to every living cell in the body, as well as hydrating them. Fluids are important for brain function, helping blood flow to the brain for cognitive function and anxiety. This applies to dogs too.

Water intake keeps your dog's system flowing smoothly, diluting urine and aiding conditions like renal disease. Furr Boost is more than just a drink, we have carefully selected the ingredients, taking human grade, real meat, fruit, and vegetables, that are blended with added oils and vitamins.

This is what makes them great functional and well-being dog drinks to support, digestion, immunity, metabolism, skin and coat and anxiety. The drink is light enough to be a part of your dog’s daily diet. You can give it as a treat away from home and 'on the go', either over their meal or in-between meals.“

How much Furr Boost can be given to a dog?

“It depends on the size of the dog, we have put feeding guidelines on the back of the pack, which are roughly one third of your dog’s daily water intake. However, more fluids can be given. For example, if it’s hot weather or your dog has been out on a good run, exercising.  A good rule of thumb for fluids is 50ml per 1kg of body weight.”

What is your favourite Furr Boost recipe and why?

“I absolutely love the Venison, Butternut Squash and Cranberry Flavour. This is due to it being a complete spin off from the first drink I made for Phoebe which is Chicken, Butternut Squash and Cranberry.

My dogs enjoy Venison because it is a new and tasty protein. It is also good for dogs with allergies to chicken or beef. We have also added whole Cranberry as it’s a natural supplement to support UTI’s!”

What is your favourite way to use Furr Boost for enrichment?

“I love making iced lolly treats for my dogs! I use a natural chew for the stick, I freeze Furr Boost first with the stick, once frozen I layer with natural yoghurt and add fruit, such as blueberries, and then freeze again. These are great anytime of the year, especially if your dogs are like mine and hug the log burner in winter or bake themselves in the sun in the summer months. It’s a tasty, iced treat and a chew to sink their teeth into, win win.”

Are there any special ingredients in the recipes that allow for Furr Boost to taste so good for our pups?

“We aim to keep the ingredients in our dog drinks as natural and as simple as possible, however we do use high quality, human grade ingredients, which dogs can’t resist and have selected flavours that complement one another to encourage pups to catch the aroma and drink their bowl dry!”

Are there any exciting developments at Furr Boost in store to keep a look out for?

“We are always developing in the background and will be looking to extend the current range; we don't have any firm plans, yet! But watch this space…”
