When the rain is pouring outside, keeping your dog entertained can be a challenge. Sadly, not every dog enjoys getting wet. Sure, some love to jump in the puddles and skid in the mud, but there are others that get cold easily and don’t enjoy being outdoors when it’s chucking it down. There are also occasions where more than rain can stop our dogs from getting outside such as thunderstorms or fireworks.
If your dog isn’t thrilled about spending time outside other than for a quick potty break, that shouldn’t mean they miss out on the fun and stimulation that comes with an outdoor adventure. Instead, take advantage of a rainy day and introduce your pup to a variety of fun indoor enrichment activities for dogs that will keep both their minds and bodies engaged.

Just like us, dogs need more than just lying around on the couch all day to stay happy and healthy. Imagine if we humans had nothing to do, day in and day out. I’m talking no books, no games, no TV, no hobbies. Pretty quickly, we’d start to feel bored, frustrated, and even anxious. Dogs are the same. Without proper enrichment, they can get stir-crazy and might act out in ways that show they’re not getting the mental and physical stimulation they need.
Indoor enrichment provides our pups with opportunities to think, explore, and use their natural instincts, all within the comfort of your home. For example, indoor activities for dogs like treat-dispensing toys, puzzles, and games give them a mental workout, helping to prevent boredom and promote positive behaviours. It’s especially important when weather limits outdoor time, but even on sunny days, enrichment keeps their brains and bodies active.
We could talk about the benefits of indoor enrichment activities for dogs for hours. It reduces stress, builds confidence, and can even make training easier. Keeping dogs engaged indoors also helps prevent unwanted behaviours like chewing, barking, or digging, which can often stem from pent-up energy. So even if we can’t take them for a walk, indoor activities are essential for their overall well-being.
Lick mats are one of the easiest and yet most effective indoor enrichment activities for dogs. All you need is a dog lick mat or slow feeder bowl to give your dog a soothing, brain-teasing activity. Lick mats are typically textured with lots of different bumps and grooves that are just asking to be covered in dog-friendly goodies such as peanut butter, yoghurt or even wet dog food. You could sprinkle food toppers on top, freeze it for a longer lasting treat or simply give it to your pup as is.
Then, let your pooch go to town on their lick mat. The action of licking is calming for dogs, and the textured surface challenges them to work for their reward. Plus, the mat keeps them occupied for a long time, promotes oral health and helps manage stress by providing mental stimulation without the need for any physical exertion.
Treat dispensers are like little puzzles for your pup that come with a tasty reward! By filling the dispenser with small treats or dried food, you turn snack time into a challenge. Your dog has to push, paw, and nudge the dispenser to release the treats, keeping them mentally engaged and physically active.
Here at WOOOF, we have a huge range of dog treat dispenser toys to choose from. Our Pupsicle Treat Dispenser is great for dogs of all sizes and unscrews so you can fill it with your pup’s favourite frozen treat. Then screw it back together and let them have at it! Or, if your pup has an affinity for yak chews, check out the Dogsee Yak Enrichment Treatoy which holds a small yak nugget which, after being popped into the microwave for a few seconds, will puff up to twice its size! Then, let your dog burn off some energy as they wrestle with the treat dispenser to try and get the yak chew out!
Nothing beats a good old-fashioned treasure hunt to keep your pup entertained indoors. Dogs love to use their noses, and hiding treats around your home lets them put their natural sniffing instincts to good use. It’s simple and one of the easiest indoor enrichment activities for dogs to set up. We guarantee you’ve got some small dog treats hidden in the house somewhere, and that’s all you need!
Start by grabbing your bag of goodies and show them to your dog. Get them to stay in a specific spot or keep them locked in a different room. Then, hide the treats around different places of the house. You could hide them in their toy basket, under sofa cushions, inside shoes and on top of surfaces they can reach. Then, let them loose and encourage them to find the treats using just their nose. This is one of the best indoor activities for dogs since it encourages their natural scent-tracking abilities, builds their confidence and sharpens their problem-solving skills.
A snuffle mat is like a mini forest floor for your dog to forage through! Made of soft fabric strips, snuffle mats encourage your dog to hunt for treats hidden within the folds. If you don’t have a snuffle mat, you can create a similar activity by hiding treats in a crumpled-up blanket. Again, this is one of those fantastic and fun indoor enrichment activities for dogs that doesn’t require too many ingredients.
Simply scatter some small treats or dried food across the snuffle mat and let your dog sniff them out. If you’re using a blanket, lay the treats in folds and crevices of the material and then scrunch it up for your dog to explore. This dog enrichment activity is excellent for metal stimulation, giving your pup an excellent way to exercise their noses and brains. Foraging also encourages slow, thoughtful movements and satisfies their natural scavenging instincts.
Who is the ultimate tug of war champion in your household? With a good-quality rope toy, you and your dog can find out and engage in a safe, exciting game of tug. Not only does this indoor enrichment activity provide a physical outlet, but it’s also a great confidence booster. So grab a sturdy rope toy and invite your dog to grab the other end and let the tugging begin! Just remember, it’s important to let them win sometimes to keep the game fun for them.
Did you know indoor enrichment activities for dogs like tug of war builds trust and strengthens the bond between you and your dog? It requires teamwork and communication between you both, and through this enrichment activity, your dog learns that playtime is exciting, engaging and safe. It’s also a great time to drop in some new commands like “take it” and “drop it”. Of course, it’s also a great source of physical exercise as your pup uses their muscles to try and grab the toy from you.
If you want to make dinner time more than just a gulp-and-go event, try using a puzzle feeder. Puzzle feeders turn eating into a game, where your dog has to work to release each piece of kibble. This can be especially helpful for fast eaters who need a bit of encouragement to slow down. They come in a variety of shapes and levels, so you can choose one suited to your dog’s skill level.
Like lick mats and treat dispensers, puzzle feeders for dogs provide both mental stimulation and prevent gulping, which is great for digestion. It’s also a great excuse to break up their routine and give them a satisfying challenge. A personal favourite of ours is the Zippypaws SmartyPaws Puzzler. It boasts lots of tiny compartments to hide your dog’s food in, which they have to slide, rotate and flip using their nose and tongue to access their dinner!
Who says an obstacle course has to be outside? Create an indoor course using everyday objects like chairs, pillows, and blankets for the ultimate indoor enrichment activity for dogs when it’s raining. Rearrange your furniture – as long as it’s safe to do so – to form small obstacles. For example, place a chair for them to crawl under, a blanket to jump over and a pillow to circle around. Then, guide your dog through the course with treats or verbal cues, encouraging them to jump, crawl, and weave their way through.
Indoor obstacle courses offer physical and mental stimulation and are a fun bonding activity. It’s one of my personal favourite rainy-day indoor enrichment activities for dogs because you can change it up every time, making it harder the smarter your pup gets!
Rainy days are ideal for brushing up on training or teaching new tricks. Training not only reinforces good behaviour but also provides mental stimulation that can tire your dog out just as much as a walk might! Gather some treats and choose a trick you want to work on, whether it’s one they already know but need some practice with or a totally brand new command.
Sitting, lying down and stay are all essential tricks to teach your dog, no matter their age. But if they’re already a master at these, why not consider teaching them to do something fun such as roll over or even shake paws. Break down the trick into small steps and reward each successful attempt. It’ll not only help to strengthen your bond but will also channel their energy and sharpen their focus.
We all love a bit of pampering, and so does your pup. One of the best indoor enrichment activities for dogs that love a good belly rub and bath is a spa day. We don’t blame them – we’d also prefer some pampering over going outside and getting wet and muddy! You could give your dog a nice bath, brush their coat and even treat them to a doggy massage. Why not even brush their teeth and clean their ears too for the full spa experience.
If it was up to us, we’d prepare a nice warm bath using Nose & Paw Balmgentle dog shampoo. Be sure to have lots of treats on-hand to reward them for staying still in the water. You could even use one of our suction lick mats which stick to the side of the bath. That’ll definitely keep them happy and distracted while you give them a much-needed wash and brush. After, use some dog-friendly toothpaste or even some easy-to-use dog finger brushes to get their teeth looking shiny and white. For the final touch, apply some Nose & Paw Balm to their feet and nose and get them cosy and dry in their microfibre towel or dressing gown!
If you know another friendly dog who also isn’t a fan of the rain, why not consider hosting a playdate! Socialising indoors with another dog provides a fun break from their usual routine and is a fantastic indoor enrichment for dogs. Before they come over, be sure to create a safe, pet-proofed space. Then get all their favourite toys out and let them run wild! Be sure to monitor play to ensure it’s friendly and respectful and have treats at the ready for when praise is warranted.
Indoor enrichment for dogs like social play is especially good if your dog is the only pup in your household. Socialisation is incredibly important as it not only teaches your dog how to bond and build relationships with other dogs but also helps to improve their confidence and reduces boredom.
Rainy days don’t have to be boring for your dog. With a little creativity and the right enrichment tools, you can keep your furry friend entertained, stimulated, and happy. Indoor enrichment for dogs can be incredibly rewarding and help prevent the boredom that might otherwise lead to unwanted behaviours. It’s also a brilliant excuse to teach them new tricks and bond with your pup during the day. Embrace the rain and make the most of it with these fun indoor enrichment ideas. We promise, your pup will thank you!

Reflective Dog Essentials: How to Keep Your Pup Visible at Night
Yes, it’s generally safe to walk dogs in light to moderate rain, as long as your dog doesn’t mind getting wet. However, heavy rain, thunderstorms, or cold, windy conditions can make it uncomfortable or even dangerous for them. If you do go out, consider using a raincoat for your dog to keep them warm and dry, and always dry them off thoroughly when you get back home.
Some dogs will refuse to go outside when it’s wet, while others might hesitate or try to retreat back indoors. Signs that a dog dislikes the rain include pulling back on the leash, excessive shaking, or standing still and refusing to move. If your dog displays these behaviours, indoor enrichment may be a better choice on rainy days to avoid any unnecessary stress.
Yes, it’s okay to occasionally skip a walk due to weather, especially if you make up for it with indoor enrichment for dogs that engage them mentally and physically. Games like tug of war and indoor fetch can help them burn energy and while enrichment toys like lick mats and treat dispensers get their brain working which can be just as tiring as a walk around the block!
While indoor enrichment might not replace a long walk or an outdoor run, they can provide plenty of mental stimulation and light physical exercise. Games like fetch in a hallway, tug of war, or an indoor obstacle course can be great ways to burn off energy without stepping outside. For dogs with high energy levels, you may need to extend these play sessions to ensure they’re getting adequate exercise. And hopefully the weather won’t stay this way forever, so in a day or two, you can get back outside and some fresh air!
