As much as we love those long autumn walks, once the weather turns wet and cold, even the most enthusiastic dogs can lose some of their bounce. Some pups will take one look at the rain and decide they’re not dipping one single toe bean into a puddle, while others seem determined to launch themselves into every puddle they find only to trail the mud right back through the house afterwards.
Walks are still essential, of course, but when it’s too miserable to stay out for long, there are other ways to give your dog a change of scenery and a bit of enrichment. One of our favourites is a dog-friendly café.
A dog-friendly café is the perfect middle ground between home comfort and outdoor adventure. Your pup stays warm, dry and cosy, while still getting the excitement of new smells, sights, people and maybe even a few canine friends. It’s also a great way to help them practise socialising in a calm, safe setting, plus, let’s be honest, it’s hard to beat a hot drink and slice of cake while your dog relaxes at your feet.
We’ve handpicked some of the very best spots across the UK, from cosy corners in Scotland to seaside stops in the South. These aren’t just any cafés that allow dogs, these are dog-friendly cafés that go above and beyond to make your four-legged friend feel genuinely welcome, with everything from special dog menus to homemade treats and even puppuccinos on offer.

Before you head out for a cosy catch-up or coffee date at a dog-friendly café, it’s worth taking a few minutes to prepare for both your sake and your pup’s. Not every dog will instantly settle in a busy environment full of new smells, people and the occasional clatter of plates, so setting them up for success makes all the difference.
We always suggest giving your dog a good walk or bit of exercise first. That way, they’ve burned off some energy and will be more likely to relax once you’re sat down. It also helps to feed them in their own travel bowl beforehand so they’re not tempted by the delicious smells wafting from the kitchen! Bring along a few of their favourite treats or an enrichment toy like a lick mat or treat dispenser to keep them happily occupied while you enjoy your drink.
Once you arrive at the café, choose a quiet corner if your dog is still building confidence in busy spaces. Keep them on a short, sturdy lead and harness and avoid tying them to furniture, just in case they get startled. A really good option are the hands-free leads by our firm favourite Zee.Dog as you can connect the lead easily to your chair leg. Don't forget your pup's travel mat for extra comfort when they're sat on the floor. And last but not least, reward calm behaviour often with tasty treats as it’ll teach your dog the best way to behave in these new settings.
Now that you’re prepped and ready to enjoy a cosy outing with your pup, it’s time to choose where to go. Luckily, the UK is packed with incredible dog-friendly cafés that make wet and windy days feel a little brighter. Here are our favourites…
Located in Aberdeen’s lively West End, The Long Dog Café is a true haven for dogs and their owners. Inspired by the owners’ dachshunds, Gavin and Linda, this dog-friendly café takes pride in welcoming every four-legged visitor with open arms often with a pup cup piled high with whipped cream or a dog-friendly beer to sip alongside their humans! It’s also famous for its over-the-top freakshakes that are perfect when you’re wanting something sweet and comforting while you retreat from the chill of the Scottish weather.
Barking Blends Coffee House in Durham is the kind of dog-friendly café that instantly feels like home. It’s a true community spot where dogs are celebrated. And if you’re in the mood for something extra special, Barking Blends also hosts dog birthday parties, complete with decorations and custom cakes!

The Lucky Pup Café in Barnsley is a dog-friendly café with a story as heartwarming as its menu. Situated within Cannon Hall Farm, it’s a spot named in honour of Flossie, a little sheepdog who was never meant to make it after being born two days late. But instead, Flossie grew up to be loyal, affectionate and full of character: the very qualities that inspired the spirit of The Lucky Pup itself. It’s a place with delicious treats for humans and pups, with snacks and water bowls for your pups at the ready.
From the moment you step inside Leash & Latte, it’s clear that dogs are just as important as their owners with puppuccinos, tasty dog treats and a cosy, inviting space designed for four-legged friends. Originally launched as the town’s first dedicated French Bulldog café, Frenchie Frenchie quickly became a hub for dog owners of all breeds. Inside, dogs are treated to a variety of goodies, from woofnuts (dog doughnuts) to puppaccinos and grain-free biscuits, while humans can indulge in coffee, cake, and even cocktail options. There’s also a playful range of accessories and dog clothing to try on and purchase!

For those looking for a dog-friendly café by the beach in Norfolk, you can’t skip Holkham Beach Café in Wells-next-the-Sea. Situated at the end of Beach Road, right before the dunes, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a stroll along the sand before settling in for a bite. The café serves a wide range of breakfast and lunch options for humans as well as puppuccinos, doggy ice creams and treats at the Bark Up Bar. It was even the winner of the Kennel Club’s Best Café in the Be Dog Friendly Awards to prove it!
The Pembrokeshire Pet Bakery in Haverfordwest started out as a fully-fledged pet bakery that eventually brought its treats to life in a cosy, dog-friendly cafe. What started as a passion for baking natural, plant-based goodies for pets has grown into a destination where dogs and their humans can enjoy time together over a coffee and a Puppuccino. Every treat is handmade, vegan and free from artificial colours and includes Pup-Cakes, Dog-Nuts, personalised birthday cakes, dried chew strips and doggy sandwiches. Anyone else suddenly hungry?
Named after Doug, an Old English Sheepdog who passed away too young, Doug’s Dog House is a warm space that combines a dog-friendly café near Kent with a full-service pet hub. The café, known as The Pup Cup, offers freshly made dog treats, Puppuccino and a welcoming atmosphere where dogs can relax while the rest of the venue spans three floors and includes dog-focused amenities, including a self-wash station, pet accessories and even enrichment activities to keep pups entertained.
And finally, Lucky Beach Café in Brighton has been a beloved spot for pups and their humans since 2013, serving up hearty brunches, organic burgers and local fish with a side of seaside charm. And of course, they have a mega dog menu too. It’s also been voted as the UK’s best beach café and a favourite sustainable restaurant.
Exploring dog-friendly cafés is such a wonderful way to enrich our dogs’ lives. Visiting these welcoming spaces allows pups to experience new sights, smells and social interactions in a safe environment, while giving us a chance to relax, enjoy good food and connect with fellow dog lovers. Supporting independent cafés also means supporting small businesses that genuinely care about creating a community for pets and their humans, which is something every dog owner can feel good about!

treatsIt’s always smart to bring the essentials like a lead, collapsible water bowl, a few treats and maybe a small towel if it’s been a muddy walk. A comfy mat for your pup to lie on is also a great idea as is some enrichment toys to keep them busy while you enjoy your cake and coffee!
Absolutely, as long as it’s from their own bowl or plate. Many cafés now offer dog-friendly treats or even full pup menus, but it’s best to avoid sneaking them bits from your own meal, just in case the ingredients aren’t safe for dogs.
Take it slow, reward good behaviour and keep the first few trips short. Pair café time with fun like a walk, a treat, or a cuddle session and with some consistency, your dog will soon love being your brunch buddy as much as you love the coffee.
