How often should my dog use a snuffle mat?

Most dogs can safely use a snuffle mat daily, it's a low-impact activity, so there's no need to limit it the way you might with high-energy exercise. Many owners build it into a daily routine, using it at mealtimes to slow down eating or as a calming activity during downtime, before a nap, when you're busy, or when your dog needs to settle after excitement.A few things to keep in mind:Little and often works well, even 10-15 minutes of snuffling can be as mentally tiring as a much longer walk, so it's a great option on lower-exercise days or for dogs recovering from injury.Watch for signs of frustration rather than engagement if it's used too frequently with the same difficulty level; rotating mats or mixing up hiding spots keeps it stimulating rather than repetitive.Hygiene matters with daily use, wash the mat regularly (most are machine washable) to keep it fresh, especially if you're using wet or oily treats. There's no strict rule here, it really comes down to your individual dog's enthusiasm and needs, but daily use is generally considered safe and beneficial rather than something to ration.

Do vets recommend snuffle mats?

Yes, vets and veterinary behaviourists commonly recommend snuffle mats, particularly as a tool for mental enrichment. Since sniffing and foraging are natural canine behaviours, snuffle mats give dogs a constructive outlet for that instinct, which vets often link to reduced boredom, lower stress and better behaviour overall. They're also frequently recommended for dogs that eat too quickly, as the mat naturally slows down mealtime and can help with digestion. That said, vets typically frame them as one useful tool among many (alongside walks, training, and other enrichment) rather than a standalone fix, and may advise against them for dogs with specific health conditions affecting their mouth, teeth, or digestion without a quick check first.

Why are snuffle mats good for dogs?

Snuffle mats are good for dogs because they provide mental stimulation by encouraging natural sniffing and foraging behaviour. Dogs use their sense of smell to explore the world and snuffle mats tap into this instinct by hiding food or treats within layers of fabric. This creates a rewarding activity that helps reduce boredom, relieve anxiety and keep your dog engaged, especially when they’re indoors. They are also commonly used to slow down fast eaters, as dogs have to work to find each piece of food rather than eating it all at once.

How to make a snuffle mat for dogs?

A snuffle mat can be made using simple materials like fleece strips and a rubber mat or base with holes. The fabric is tied or threaded through the base to create thick layers and pockets where treats can be hidden. While DIY options are possible, ready-made snuffle mats are typically more durable, securely constructed and designed with varied textures and compartments to make the activity more engaging for your dog. These designs often last longer and provide a better enrichment experience compared to homemade versions.

What are snuffle mats made of?

Snuffle mats are usually made from soft materials such as fleece or felt, attached to a sturdy base made from rubber or plastic. The fabric is arranged into strips, folds or pockets that mimic grass-like textures, allowing treats to be hidden throughout the mat. These materials are chosen because they are gentle on a dog’s nose and mouth while still being durable enough for repeated use. Many mats also include non-slip bases to keep them stable during play.

What to put in snuffle mats?

Snuffle mats are best used with dry food such as kibble or small training treats that can be easily hidden within the fabric. Using your dog’s regular food is a great way to turn mealtime into an enriching activity, while higher-value treats can make the experience more exciting and engaging. It’s generally recommended to avoid wet food, as it can make the mat harder to clean and may lead to odours if not washed regularly. Choosing small, dry, and slightly scented treats helps encourage your dog to use their nose and stay interested for longer.
